As we encounter new issues and common questions related to our File Investigator products, we will add the answers here. You may be able to save time if you can find your answer here rather than submitting a request to our technical support queue.

What does File Investigator do ?

File Investigator identifies files by scanning them, much like a virus scanner does, then informs you of the file type, metadata extracted from the file and background information on how to use the file.  More details are available on the How It Works page.

What file formats does File Investigator support?

It depends on the version of File Investigator that you use.  New file formats are being added quarterly.  The latest OEM API Kit, File Find for Windows and Directory for Windows support 4,000+ file formats.

What applications are available for consumers?

File Investigator File Find mimics the original Microsoft File Find feature that searches for files on your hard drive. File Investigator Directory for Windows mimics the DOS command line DIR command.

What resources are available to software developers?

We provide File Investigator OEM API Kits for Windows, Sun Solaris UNIX & Linux environments.  For businesses that depend on our products, we also provide Maintenance Contracts to ensure that their every need is met.  These contracts include 48 hour (maximum) response times and 2 week (maximum) turn around time for update build releases that solve reported problems.

When will I receive my registration key?

After you purchase your product, you should receive an email message confirming your purchase and a separate email message later providing you with the registration key. We strive to get your registration key to you as quickly as possible, but sometimes it may take hours.  If this does not happen within 24 hours of your purchase, then please notify Forensic Innovations Sales of the problem, and they will resolve it for you.  Make sure that you keep your registration key for any future communications with us.

Why are new versions released every 3 months?

We are constantly adding more file formats and improving the accuracy and metadata extraction for our existing file formats.  There are thousands of different file formats, and our goal is to support as many as possible.

Purchase a Maintenance Agreement for your current version of an OEM API Kit, and receive the next 4 quarterly versions.  Each renewal of the Maintenance Agreement includes 4 more quarterly versions.
